The Present as Legacy

3.IX.25

Almost through the first draft of a new novel (about a psychic Afghan woman), I become unsure whether it is about the past’s claim on the present or rather about future faux pas. When the draft is finally ready a few months later, I realize the question remains. Instead of letting the text answer it, all my energy has gone into shaping the query. As if the present were the legacy of both the past and the future. A strange arrangement, open to ongoing reconfiguration.
